If you’re not using ChatGPT for keyword research, you’re missing out! In this article, I’m sharing my favorite ChatGPT prompts for keyword research and explaining how I put them together. That way, you can take them, change them up, and make them even better.

But before we get started, I want to be clear: ChatGPT shouldn’t replace your trusty keyword research tools or traditional keyword research methods. Don’t just take the data ChatGPT gives you at face value.

What you can use ChatGPT for is brainstorming ideas for topics and finding inspiration.

ChatGPT Prompts To Use In Keyword Research

Using ChatGPT for keyword research involves crafting prompts that guide the AI to generate useful and creative keyword ideas, questions, and topics related to your niche or industry. Below are several prompt examples you can use with ChatGPT to aid in your keyword research efforts:

Keyword Ideas Discovery

  • Find keyword

This prompt helps you discover primary keywords relevant to your topic or niche. It’s the starting point for broader keyword research, aiming to identify key terms your target audience uses.

Prompt:

Generate [X] keywords for [seed keyword]

You should start with broad terms related to your industry or niche and use these as seed keywords to branch out. Use synonyms and related terms to expand your keyword list.

List the top 10 semantically related keywords and entities for the topic "[Your Topic].

One of my favorite ways to generate keyword ideas is to manually use Google autocomplete, going through the alphabet from A to Z. It’s a simple trick that doesn’t even require a fancy keyword research tool, and you can actually do it with ChatGPT too!

Give me five popular keywords that include 'ChatGPT' in the word, and the following letter starts with 'a'. Once you're done with that, move on to giving five more popular keywords that include 'ChatGPT' for each letter of the alphabet, from 'b' to 'z'.

  • Long-tail keyword

You can generate more specific, often longer phrases that are less competitive and more targeted than broader keywords. It is ideal for capturing niche segments of your market.

Prompt:

Generate [X] long-tail keywords for [seed keyword]

You can refine your keyword search by guiding ChatGPT to identify long-tail keywords of a certain length. For instance, direct ChatGPT to discover phrases with over six words related to a particular subject.

  • Find questions on a topic

You can leverage ChatGPT’s extensive knowledge to find those frequently asked questions related to our target keywords. Here’s how I’d approach it:

Generate a broad list: Start with a general prompt, ChatGPT will provide a wide range of questions.

Generate a list of 10 questions about the [seed keyword]

Refine with specific keywords: Next, ask ChatGPT to focus on questions that include your specific keywords.

For example,

What questions do people ask about [your keyword] that also include the words [specific keyword 1] and [specific keyword 2]? Give me 10 questions.

Eliminate duplicates and similar questions: Finally, ask ChatGPT to consolidate the list, removing any duplicate or similar questions. You could say,

Combine the 2 lists above, remove any duplicates or questions with similar semantical words and give me a final list of questions

  • Find keywords based on search intent and user personas

Understanding your target audience is key in keyword research, and user personas can greatly help. ChatGPT can help you get a starting point in understanding these customer personas, giving you a better idea of who you’re trying to reach and what they’re interested in. This helps you stay focused and targeted with your keyword choices.

For the topic of "[Your Topic]," list 10 keywords each for different types of user personas.

Based on those topics and user personas, give me 20 questions that those specific people might be searching for.

Based on each question listed above for each persona, list the keywords and long-tail keywords that I should target for each persona, and put them in a table.

Next, you need to understand the intent behind those terms and what kind of content they want to find.

For example, a business owner just starting to learn about SEO might search for basic info, like “what is SEO.” But as they get more familiar with the concept and start making decisions, their searches become more specific, like “top SEO firms.” This shows how important it is to create content that matches the changing needs of your audience at each stage of their journey.

Prompt:

For the topic of list X keywords each for the different types of searcher intent that a would be searching for.

  • Find comparison and vs. keywords

Finding “comparison” or “vs.” keywords is another key part of keyword research. This type of keyword is valuable for creating content highlighting how your product stacks up against the competition.

Prompt:

Generate [X] comparison keywords for [seed keyword]

Keyword Categorization

  • Keyword clustering

ChatGPT can also be a helpful tool for keyword clustering. Often, different keywords have the same underlying intent. ChatGPT can help you group these similar keywords together so you can discover that a single piece of content can actually target multiple keywords at the same time.

Prompt:

Group related keywords together. List of keywords include [insert your list keyword]

  • Keyword categorization by search intent

This prompt helps tailor your keyword strategy by focusing on the motivations behind searches and the characteristics of your target audience, ensuring the content meets their needs and interests.

Prompt:

Organize the listed keywords into a table, placing each keyword in the first column and its corresponding search intent in the second column. List of keywords.

Keyword Research Using ChatGPT vs. Keyword Research Tool Ahref

ChatGPT and Ahrefs are great keyword research tools, but they have different strengths.

ChatGPT excels in generating creative keyword ideas and content strategies with ease, thanks to its conversational interface. It’s particularly useful for brainstorming and exploring related topics or long-tail keywords that might not immediately come to mind. However, ChatGPT cannot provide real-time data on keyword metrics such as search volume, competition level, or trend analysis, which are crucial for a data-driven SEO strategy.

Ahrefs, on the other hand, is a powerhouse for detailed keyword analysis, offering comprehensive data on search volumes, keyword difficulty, competitive landscape, and search intent. It’s an indispensable tool for SEO professionals and marketers looking to base their strategies on hard data and in-depth market analysis. But Ahrefs can be expensive and a bit complicated to learn.

So, ChatGPT is great for getting inspiration and a wide range of ideas, while Ahrefs is better for refining your strategy with detailed data and competitive insights.

A good way to approach keyword research is to start with ChatGPT to generate ideas and then use Ahrefs to analyze those ideas and see which ones are the most promising. This way, you get the best of both worlds: creativity and data-driven decision-making.

5 Tips For Using ChatGPT For Keyword Research

Here are some tips I’ve learned from using ChatGPT for keyword research

  • Combine with traditional tools: ChatGPT is awesome for brainstorming, but it’s even better when paired with tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Semrush. This gives you a complete picture of search volume, competition, and trends.
  • Iterate and refine: Don’t just settle for the first set of keywords. Tweak your prompts based on what you get and explore different angles to find hidden gems.
  • Don’t rely solely on ChatGPT: ChatGPT is a fantastic tool, but it’s still AI. It might not always be accurate or up-to-date, so always check its suggestions with other reliable sources.
  • Analyze competitor keywords: Ask ChatGPT to find out what keywords your competitors are ranking for. This can give you valuable insights and help you find areas where you can improve your own strategy.
  • Be specific and clear: When you’re asking ChatGPT for help, be clear about what you want. The more specific your prompts, the better the results.

Bottom Line

Mastering ChatGPT keyword research prompts can be a game-changer for your SEO and content strategy. By using these top prompts, you’re well on your way to boosting your online visibility and getting more people to engage with your content.
